In this blog, we talk about what a boost controller is, why you would need one, and our best tips for installing an aftermarket boost controller.
What is a Boost Controller?
A Boost Controller in a Subaru regulates the amount of boost pressure the turbocharger produces. It adjusts the wastegate (which is a part on the turbocharger) to either allow more or less air flow through the turbine. Please note that these are only found in turbocharged Subarus.
More Boost = Wastegate closed for longer, so the turbo spins more
Less Boost = Wastegate opens sooner, which limits the pressure in the turbo.
Why Would I Need an Upgraded Electronic Boost Controller?
There are a few reasons you might want a boost controller, but mainly it is to get a more consistent boost, since stock systems can fluctuate, especially with increased horsepower. This consistency is important for mods to work well, so you are matching the requested boost pressure the ECU expects based on its programming or tune.
How to Install an Aftermarket Boost Controller
Our biggest tip here is not to cut the engine harness to install a boost controller. Instead, add the mating half (connectors can be found below) on the aftermarket controller to make it plug into your car. You'll also want to mount it somewhere in the engine bay that is away from the heat of the turbo. We make a high-quality extension harness for the boost controller, in case you need to mount it farther away based on your engine setup. For swap GC cars, we have a custom-made bracket that will keep the controller safe.
