In this plug spotlight we discuss the Subaru MAF plug. MAF stands for Mass Air Flow. The sensor that this plug connects to is actually a combination sensor which means it has two inputs in one; the MAF and the IAT (Intake Air Temperature). The sensor is reading how fast the air is coming into the engine as well as what temperature the air is. Cold air is going to be more dense than hot air so the ECU needs to see both air speed as well air temp so it can adjust appropriately.
The MAF plug is also used in Speed Density tuning. However, the connector is converted to utilize only the IAT information from a new sensor near the throttle body. The IAT and MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor are used in a calculation by the ECU to determine how much air is coming into the engine. Check the bottom of this post for more info on our Speed Density wiring kits.
Subaru has changed this plug over the years. We'll start with the newer cars and work our way backward. We generally have replacements for some of the early 90s models as well, so just ask if you need something that isn't shown.
