This issue can be hard to diagnose because it does not create a standard P code. A basic OBD-II scanner may show no codes because it only reads engine P-codes. You need a scanner that can access Subaru’s ABS/VDC and electronic parking-brake modules to retrieve the actual C-code.
The parking brake holds the vehicle in place after you park. Depending on the Subaru, it may use a traditional hand-operated lever, a foot pedal, or an electronic parking brake controlled by a button.
How the Parking-Brake System Works
The parking brake is designed to keep the car from rolling while it is parked. It does not control the exterior brake lights.
The term “parking brake light” usually refers to the warning or status light on the dashboard. It does not refer to another set of lights at the rear of the vehicle.
How the wiring works depends on whether the Subaru has a traditional mechanical parking brake or an electronic parking brake.
Where Is the Mechanical Parking-Brake Switch Located?
On a vehicle with a hand-operated parking brake, the switch is generally located near the base of the parking-brake lever underneath the center-console trim.
On a vehicle with a foot-operated parking brake, the switch is normally located near the parking-brake pedal mechanism underneath the dashboard.
This is a relatively simple indicator circuit. The switch tells the car whether the mechanical parking brake is applied or released.
Where Are the Electronic Parking-Brake Components Located?
The driver’s parking-brake switch is usually located in the center console.
The parking-brake motors or actuators are located at the rear brake calipers, near the rear wheels. Each actuator has an electrical connection that allows the vehicle to operate the parking brake.
