Why Are We Ending Our Harness Merge Services?

Why Are We Ending Our Harness Merge Services?

Dec 3, '24

Dear Valued iWire Engine Swap Customers,

It's probably best to rip the band-aid quickly. I am writing to let you know that we will conclude our engine swap merge services in the Spring of 2025. This will give us the bandwidth to continue growing our new products, including iVSS and iDCCD, plug-and-play upgrade kits, tuning wiring products, and replacement OEM parts like connectors.

Starting December 1st, we opened 25 merge slots for those who wished to get in while we still offered this service and within a few days those slots were filled up including a sizeable waitlist.

If you see this letter after we've concluded our service, we apologize that the opportunity has passed. We recommend looking at Facebook groups or online forums for people who do wire harness merge work. For those who already have an engine conversion harness, we will still be here to support you as best we can.

Why Would We Make this Change?

The simple answer is that engine swaps are becoming increasingly difficult to continue due to expanded emissions enforcement at the state and federal levels, combined with a steady decrease in the volume of swap-related projects.

We have maintained our harness swapping service over the last few years because we love doing it and want to support the Subaru community that has helped build this business. Given the difficulty of finding the older components to put in these cars, we had been trying to find a way to make modern CANbus platforms part of our swap lineup. However, as we worked through the legalization process, it became clear that we could not get them legal in all 50 states. In this climate, we just couldn't take the risk to move forward on a service that could risk the business and the livelihood of our employees.

We've been pushing extremely hard in the last few years to build up other aspects of our business so we could continue to survive and thrive if this day were to come. The team's hard work has culminated in being able to focus on an opportunity to do something that has been a personal passion of mine for many years: building our own hardware and software to advance the technology in all Subaru models. We love helping GC and GD builds, and our new product lineup will still include these models, but we're excited to help even more Subaru owners with repairs and upgrades. We will continue to stay true to our mission by innovating while emphasizing great customer service and simplicity of installation with our plug-and-play harnesses.

A Little Bit of Reflection if You Don't Mind

Hopefully, you guys are not motherf***ing us and kept reading because this is the really important part. I want to thank all those who have gotten us to the point where we've had to make this very difficult decision. Looking back at the inception of iWire 16 years ago from my parent's garage, doing only a few merges in the first year on an old Formica countertop held up by a couple of cinder blocks, I had no idea we would be able to get where we are now. Without your support, we simply would not have been able to grow to work in a large office, employ a number of excellent people, and provide a thriving plug-and-play line of products, a wide array of replacement connectors, tools, wiring supplies, and the game-changing new electronic components that are finally becoming a reality.

It's a source of immense satisfaction and pride for myself and our team, both past and present, to witness over 2,000 engine swaps become a reality. These swaps are successful because of YOU, the owners' hard work and determination, and the investment of your blood, sweat, tears, and hard-earned wages to fulfill a dream.

We will continue to care for these cars and you, the owners, but we will do it in a new and exciting way, so we look forward to you joining us on this new adventure.

Sincerely,

Brian Keene
